Revamped intranet draws more than 8,000 visits on Day One
With zero budget and only in-house expertise, SMS Assist’s intranet, the Hub, badly needed a revamp. The team relied on solid research to guide the way to success—winning a Grand Prize for ’Best Overall Intranet‘ in Ragan’s 2021 Employee Communications Awards.
The Hub was launched in 2015 as a handful of web pages for SMS Assist’s 400 employees. By 2018, the company had nearly doubled in size, but the Hub remained unmaintained, challenging to navigate and useless to employees for day-to-day work. Clearly a reboot was necessary.
The Communications and Experience Team was assigned to redesign the intranet. The overhaul began with research. It included a full audit of information on the previous Hub, user research and best practice research. After the research phase, the team began creating wireframes and navigation over a three-week period, using the widgets and built-in capabilities of the program.
The most prominent and exciting new features on the Hub were a media gallery, a community board, a company calendar, an employee spotlight and a search feature.
The new Hub was instantly a success with employees. The day it launched, the Hub had more than 8,000 site visits—a current record. Employees now visit the Hub an average of four times a day.
Congratulations to the team of Elizabeth Klisser, Michael Savio, Taylor Townsend, Will Madej, Rod Stevenson and Cynthia Pascacio.
