Internal communicators are often challenged to meet employees where they are. The range of strategies for meeting that imperative is vast, but it often comes down to an effective, navigable intranet featuring streamlined, targeted and consistent messaging.

Matt Adkins, senior account executive at Interact Software, sat down with Ragan’s director of learning and council content Mike Prokopeak at the Employee Communication and Culture Conference for a quick conversation about employee and administration engagement, tools and collaboration.

To boost engagement and connectedness across your workforce, Adkins recommends targeting specific audiences using community hubs to post information that employees want to see and engage with.

It can be tempting to prioritize organization-wide communication — new policy changes, HR information, or strategic and financial updates, but don’t discount the impact of socialization and camaraderie on employee culture and the success of the organization.

“What do employees want to see?” Adkins said. “They want to see stories relevant to them.”

Social channels within your intranet can be instrumental yet casual places where both employees and administrators can make posts and share knowledge of happenings from across the organization.

Adkins explained that short-form blogging can amplify employee voices on an intranet’s social feeds and offer an opportunity for communicators to tell more creative, human-centric stories.

He also noted that investing in targeting features and mobile access can help mediate the chaos of communications and pay long-term dividends.

“Comms after COVID is evolving and changing at a fast pace,” Adkins said. “A lot of internal communicators want to push it out, but don’t have a modernized platform.”
