Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP raise the bar on DE&I
Recognizing the importance of DE&I — from recruitment to talent management and development — law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP have set the bar high in its global DE&I mission, empowering attorneys with diverse backgrounds to foster an inclusive culture and ensure equitable access to opportunities for employees companywide. Its efforts are a win as DE&I Team of the Year in Ragan’s CSR/Diversity Awards.
Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom’s global DE&I initiative has one mission in mind: to hire, develop and empower highly performing attorneys whose diverse backgrounds, perspectives and experiences enable it to deliver outstanding solutions to clients. Three partners in the firm co-chair the DE&I initiative and work closely with local office committees, a global women’s initiative committee and administrative professionals. Its efforts are paying off: Leadership at the firm continues to reflect the diversity the firm is committed to. Its 2020 and 2021 partner promotion classes were some of the most diverse in its history, with 52% comprised of women and people of color, and representation on its Policy Committee (a top governing body) at 42% women and diverse partners — an increase of roughly 80% from 2017.
While the firm recognizes there’s still more work to be done, its DE&I initiatives in hiring, development and engagement, as well as external collaborations, are addressed in this way:
Attorney Recruitment & Hiring: Skadden’s 1L Scholars Program (established in 2012) is a paid summer internship providing students with a 1L Summer Associate experience. The firm has hired more than 240 1L Scholars, and more than half of the program’s alumni have become full-time associates. During hiring season, the firm has a presence at over 30 U.S. law schools and sponsors programming for 30 diverse law student affinity groups at more than 20 law schools. The result of these efforts: 57 percent of the 2021 U.S. summer class firm-wide were people of color; and 51 percent of the class were women. Additionally, Skadden partners with the SEO Corporate Law Program (SEO), a paid summer internship program that provides work experience and mentoring in a law firm or legal department to high-achieving college graduates of color who are about to begin their first year of law school.
Development, Retention & Engagement: After onboarding professionals to the firm, the professional development journey continues. The firm offers (to mention a few) inclusion training; global affinity networks to promote the recruitment, retention and development of women and diverse attorneys; a Women’s Leadership Forum, which since its inception, 54% of participants have been promoted including 29 promotions to partner; and a New Partners Mentoring Program, which connects recently promoted or hired women with existing women partners to share best practices.
Work-Life Policies and Resources: Skadden recognizes the importance of well-being too. Acknowledging the demands of the pandemic on caregiving attorneys, in 2020, the firm introduced policies to allow flexibility and hosted focus groups to understand how it could provide additional support. Among its other policies: Mindful Return, a four-week online program for new parents that provides assistance through transition and childcare resources; Caregiver Pandemic Relief, so caregiving attorneys can create an individualized, structured and consistent schedule; and Sidebar Months in which attorneys may be granted a leave of absence for a defined period of time.
In 2020, Skadden spearheaded the launch of the Law Firm Antiracism Alliance (LFAA), a partnership of more than 300 law firms with legal services organizations to tackle systemic racism in the law. The LFAA now includes more than 165,000 attorneys committed to identifying and dismantling systemic and structural racism in the law.
Its ongoing efforts around DE&I include a speaker series and ongoing training for anti-racism, allyship and inclusive leadership; wellbeing resources to address multicultural perspectives; a metrics-driven approach to sustain DE&I progress; among other initiatives. Skadden also partners with diverse bar associations and legal organizations, as well as several external impact organizations to continue to make a difference.
Congrats to the team at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. –JG
