Fluor’s newsletter thrives with quality, variety
The company’s HSE Matters newsletter snags readers with smart articles, colorful pictures, and sharp design.
A lot of different pieces go into the production of a newsletter. It’s a product of writing, reporting, photography, design, management, story choice, editing, and a few indefinable attributes. Fluor’s quarterly newsletter, HSE Matters, is a colorful, creative publication that can boast that all those attributes shine.
In addition to sterling writing and visuals, the newsletter offers a variety of items and articles about the three topics in the title: health, safety, and environment. In just one issue, the newsletter features a profile of the company’s “champion of accountability,” a list of work safety risks, an infographic on whether standing rather than sitting at a desk is really better for workers, short profiles of employee award winners, a piece about an employee who went on an anti-cancer bike ride, a short piece about environmental initiatives, and more.
It’s comprehensive, and most importantly, it’s a good read. For that reason, HSE Matters is the winner of Ragan’s 2013 Employee Communications Award for Best Newsletter (Print).
The team behind the newsletter—Sara Simmons, Richard Yu, and Kristy Marshall—hasn’t been sitting still, either. In the past year, HSE Matters has added a letter from the editor, more stories from the company’s diverse workforce around the world, more original photos, and more profiles of workers.
The work has paid off. Readership has doubled in the past year.
