The most common—and bizarre—workplace productivity killers
Sure, you’ve wasted hours on Facebook or gossiping. But have you killed time by flying drones around the office or looking for a mail-order bride? This study reveals some people have.
It’s 2 p.m., and you have to file a story by 3.
You’re staring at a blank screen, willing (OK, desperately begging) the words to come, but they don’t.
You silently berate yourself, because you could have started working on this story yesterday but didn’t. Instead, you gabbed with your favorite co-workers and took a few extra snack breaks.
Sound familiar?
If so, you aren’t the only one to fall victim to procrastination. A recent survey from CareerBuilder reveals the most common workplace productivity killers, as well as some of the most bizarre things employers have caught people doing to avoid work.
First, the typical time sucks (and yes, there’s some overlap):
1. Cell phones/texting: 52 percent
2. The Internet: 44 percent
3. Gossip: 37 percent
4. Social media: 36 percent
5. Email: 31 percent
6. Visits from co-workers: 27 percent
7. Smoke/snack breaks: 27 percent
8. Meetings: 26 percent
9. Noisy co-workers: 17 percent
10. Sitting in a cubicle: 10 percent
