Survey: Email etiquette in the workplace

Fundera conducted a survey of 1,000 U.S. workers to get a sense of how people prefer to communicate on the job, including which channels they like most and what comms qualms they have.

More than 55 percent of respondents said email is still their top communication channel choice. In-person conversations ranked second with 15.9 percent, and 11.2 percent of respondents said instant messaging was their preferred communication platform.

Email still reigns supreme, but inbox ire is easily provoked. Misunderstandings are a major concern. Fundera writes:

According to survey participants, people of every generation were concerned about having their tone misinterpreted in an email.

Of those surveyed, Baby Boomers expressed the most trepidation over emails’ being misunderstood; freewheeling millennials voiced the least concern.
